Unexpected gem!

Life is ever-changing, one moment I am sad and the next I am beaming with happiness. hehehehe well you can guess how I feel now. Anyway I had a great night last night… and no I didn’t go out and go large. I stayed in last night and completed watching Lie to Me.

Lie to Me is the first Korean series that I have watched. I am happy that I started with it…..hmmmm its sounds like I am going to become an addict! But seriously now, it was real good acting by Yoon Eun-Hye and Kang Ji-Hwan. Very natural. Awe just thinking about the pretty Yoon Eun-Hye makes me smile! The story is sought of predictable, but the episodes were delivered so well that it feels like a fresh plot. hmmm I cant seem to find any complaints, the soundtrack was good too.

I shall not write a synopsis of this great series. I shall leave it to you to watch it. Ahhh it’s a glorious day. I think I will go to campus later.

A couple of days ago there was a webcast from CERN about the status of the Higgs boson. Two talks were given by the ATLAS and CMS teams. I only stayed to watch the ATLAS talk. It’s an exciting time in Physics! It was reported that there were 3 events at ~126 GeV, which is exciting since this is smaller than expected mass of the Higgs. Well 3 events is definitely not enough for confirmation of a discovery but the situation is looking suspicious at 126 GeV! Not much more wiggle room for the Higgs to escape to if it exists! The poor guys at the Tevatron must be pulling their hair out for not seeing a signal there! If only they were given more time!

Hehehe life is good. My emotions fluctuate so quickly recently, I think I am not stable at all!! hehehe the fact that I can type this out and still smile gives me something to think about!

ahhh time just flies by. I have been keeping busy with the sudden interest my supervisor has taken in my project work.

hehehehe for the past 2 months I have been wandering around aimlessly in the junk yard of technical papers. Reading the garbage that others have written and finding no use for their work (as you can surmise my bias against these papers which seem to do nothing but waste the electricity that was used in its preparation). Gone are the days when physicists used to think long and hard before they publish, and make lasting contributions to Physics. Anyway, there is no point in raging about this!

I turned instead to the ever faithful text-book to add to my knowledge of gauge theories. There’s the good and bad here too, with some being too simple and never quite getting to the stuff that you need, while others skim through the details so quickly that you are left behind, stuck in a pothole that would require a course in differential geometry and functional analysis to full. Ahh academic life is never simple. You cover up one of the holes in your knowledge only to see another being exposed.

Sometimes I wonder if there will ever come a time in my life when I shall be able to breeze through the complicated mathematics and be able to extract the physics with little effort. To see and hear what the equations are whispering. If Feynman was still around I wonder if would still stick to his claim that all physics should be explained with his hand gestures!

Ok guys I am going to be honest now, The previous paragraph was when I was sober. I just came back from a night with the guys and I can remember much of wha happened! It was the birthday of a friend who just turned 30, and he wanted to go large! Well he went large but I think in all fairness that as I write this that none of us as were prepared for how intoxicated all of us were at the end of the night!

My eyes are starting to droop. So I think that this is the end of the night! Till another time guys on the net! Be cool and chill! hehehehe I laugh about it but I think the best quality about me right now is that I am patient and willing to take the blame for anything is necessary to save a friend! Irrationality prevails dudes! I don’t know if Justin would agree with this since he puked twice on the pavement tonight! He is a great friend of mine! heheheh He is fast asleep right now as I blog. In fact I think that all of them are asleep!.

yeah its been a while…. phd work is rough. I don’t think I shall manage this campaign! My supervisor keeps on changing his mind on what is necessary in the Lagrangian… alas this is very unsatisfying since I can’t proceed with any calculations until we have decided on the Lagrangian.

Well enough of that, I was fooling around on lastfm and wanted to trying generating some tags for my profile… alas that doesn’t seem to working so I shall just leave it alone. Recently I have taken a liking to Korean music. Some one in my Japanese class suggested I might like korean music. Apparently the grammar structure of the two languages are similar. Well it’s not like I would notice this from listening to the music. Though I must admit that some Korean groups have grown on me. Well in particular 2NE1 make really nice beats. Park Bom is really pretty too…

I got to trek up to campus today to return some of my library books….. its blazing outside soo..well I still need to go but the discomfort to come is not encouraging!

I said that I would watch the films below and comment about them. So lets see, My Sassy Girl is a great film. Very different from the english films. Quite dramatic too. The score is really good too. A good combination of comedy, romance and drama. It leaves you with a good feeling at the end. I was inspired to go and read the original web posting by Kim Ho-Sik. Here is the partially translated version I found. If you guys know of a complete translation of the web posting, please leave me a note of its address.

Ok so the past couple of days have been boring and nerve-racking at the same time. Since the ICTP school of Physics has come to an end , there is not much that I can do here….. well there is touring, I don’t have enough cash to squander it on public transport! Trieste is a good place to walk around and I have done as much walking as I could! Alas today I just read some group theory notes and tried to do some ambitious stuff that did not end up going anywhere!

These past couple of days have been tense since I am eagerly waiting for an email from a certain Korean girl that I met at the school! Alas this is such weird behaviour for me. I havent felt this nervous or hopeful about another person for so long….. My life is changing again slowly and I think that this shall be good for me! Human emotion so spectacular…. just the other day I was smiling stupidly to myself, and now I am so nervous about some email. Ah this is what it must mean to live and not just being alive! I hope she says encouraging things in her reply. ^-^

Anyway I have also gone on a rampage and gotten hold of some really great asian films, which I recommend you watch! A friend of mine lent these films to me, some of which I shall recommend to you:

Okuribito / おくりびと

This is such a good film. It shall moisten your eyes! And the score is really something! The composer of the score for Okurbito is the famous Joe Hishaishi from the last post!

My Sassy Girl /Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo

I havent watched this as yet though after reading the reception that this film got from the Korean audience, this must be a sure win! I shall watch later tonight and tell you guys whether it lived up to expectations!

Oldboy/ Oldeuboi

This such a good film! Park Chan-Wook is one of my favourite directors. The storyline is superb and you’ll marvel at the end. This film is a must watch! It’s very different from the Western films that is shown in the cinemas at home. This Korean film is something else!

There are some other ones that I have watched but alas I am too tired to look for the trailer to post their names. Well there is always tomorrow so…..

Ah but before I leave, I have to recommend that you watch these films in their original languages and not a dubbed version of them. Since I have started taking Japanese language lessons, I have come to appreciate the simplicity of English but also to marvel at how much of emotion can be conveyed in simple phrases of other languages. I think that English is a great language for communicating facts, I say this with the hard sciences and mathematics in mind, but it maybe true for the other fields of study to. So much more emotion is conveyed in Japanese that it’s quite amazing, hmm maybe it’s because of the cultural background that this is so. So I implore you to watch foreign(non-English) language films in their original language!

Ah and to end I have found another good version of Ave Maria by Shikata Akiko

yeah you can go ahead and tear-up while listening to her.. I shall not judge you! . The Andre Rieu and Mirusia Louwerse combination is also amazing.

Today is the second last day of the ICTP 2011 Summer School in Particle Physics. It was a bit sad knowing that the school is coming to an end. Being in an environment like this and just working with other enthusiastic people on physics was really great!

I made some new friends here at the school, two guys from South Korea, Han and Sung. Really cool guys! Both are working on Supersymmetry and pursuing careers in high energy theoretical physics. Han made an interesting remark today at the special dinner. He said that it was quite amazing that all of us had made the choice of giving up fairly good life of being an applied physicist, engineer or a businessman, earning a large salary and getting the pretty girl, all in favour of the pursuit of the truth of the physical world.

This was quite amazing to me that he had also had these thoughts in his head. Initially I also had doubts about my choice of career…. well I still do have some nagging thoughts running around in the deep recesses of my mind, but at the end of the day I think I am happy about my choice of becoming a theoretical physicist! Besides things are not as gloomy as I paint it, there are lots of stuff that are great about my career….. like meeting hot asian babes at summer schools!!!!! hehehehehe…. yes as you may have surmised Ms. Hanoi is still occupying thought time in my mind!

It’s a bit sad that we humans can’t live an infinite amount of time. There are so many things that I want to do in my life that… I just don’t think that ONE lifetime is enough for me! But alas it is because we have a finite amount of time that we make the best of things and find success and happiness in places least expected! hehehehe I am getting philosophical now at this time of the night..

Anyway today as I was randomly browsing through some YouTube videos I came across some impressive sounds, that I think you guys should definitely listen to.

The first track is Ave Maria by Kokia. I have heard some other renditions of Ave Maria but this one is spectacular! Her voice seems to whisper to the strings of your heart causing them to resonate.

The other that I was moved by was this piece called Summer by Joe Hisaishi. This is the piano version which I think is better then the full version with other instruments

The original version is good but I prefer the piano version.

Both are so good pieces of art! I marvel at human creativity and am in awe of such feats of splendour! hmmm I feel sleepy now. I guess its time to call it a night.

Yeah so its been a while. Master’s was done and on to greater things(I hope!!). I have started my PhD this year in High Energy Theoretical Physics. Things are going slowly now but working consistently is the key!

Anyway I am in Italy now, attending the ICTP 2011 Summer School of Particle Physics. One of the perks of being a student is that I get to travel around the world to Physics events, like this summer school. It’s a good chance to see the world at minimal cost and learn from the masters themselves!

Italy is a nice place. Here in Trieste, it’s quite and life is slow. Physics really gets done here! The view of the sea is spectacular from my room. The gentle lulling sound of the waves against the pier is troubling though since its such a sleep inducing sound!!! I think that this is the place where I want to come and settle down.

I met this interesting girl from Vietnam, Hanoi. She seems like a pleasant girl, and has such a sweet accent when she speaks english! But this is not why I am blogging after so long, the reason I am blogging again is that I cant help but want to say SHE IS SUPER HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She has these lovely eyes that you can just lose yourself in. And such a sweet smile and……er no no, I think that I shall stop with the description or I may just forget about the post. hmmm……

I think I have developed a thing for Asian girls this summer. I feel like I was blind to the beauty of the world. Well you know where I shall be going for my post-doc now!!! hehehehe I cant help but smile as I type this post since she has being fulling my thoughts and chasing away the physics in my mind! This is weird, normally I could concentrate on physics like a laser beam, not allowing any stray thoughts to enter in the reasoning process but now, I find myself smiling stupidly during the day as my mind wanders its way to her. Well I think I am a bit happier these days, so I think it’s a good side effect of my minds excursions!

Anyway be happy like I am and work hard at life!

Ahhh after a long dry spell of not playing any FPS games, I just have to wait a few more days for the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops! Well I am hyped up about it since the last COD MW2 was really great but quite short on the single player campaign. Anyways this edition of COD will be made by Treyarch who was responsible for COD World at War. I have great hopes for it and I crossing fingers that the campaign is a bit longer the previous versions.

But anyway moving on now, I have managed to scrounge up and pay for internet at home! This is quite nice, always being able to google anything up or just checking up the news and most importantly being able to download some series and movies! Ahhh having access to the internet at home is quite intoxicating Previously I had to access the net from my office at the university, which while is nice but…. well not the same as when I sit in the lounge at home just browsing! You know humanity is embracing the virtual age when even I am getting on the bandwagon! Society has changed quite a bit with the introduction of the internet, I had a chance to roam around Second life for a bit and it was quite weird meeting and interacting with the avatars of other humans from across the world! Very impressive, a new age is coming where maybe humanity will be able leave behind(for a short time or maybe permanently!) the fragile vessels that contain our consciousness and travel the vastness of the digital “spacetime”. Ahh such an exciting prospect…..it gives me goosebumps.

As can be surmised I am quite happy! hehehehehe…. well I am off to watch a movie and drift off to sleep!

Going LAAAAARGE must have been nice but I can’t recall much about that night. Just the devastation on my liver and a throbbing headache remained. I think going that large must be reserved for very special and exceedingly rare occasions. I don’t think my body will be able to take that much of a beating often. Though I remember my time at the university residence when Friday was the night of destruction, waking around the following morning would reveal slumped bodies that could make in time to curl up into bed and just slept where they had fallen!

Well it’s been 3 three weeks since I submitted my M.Sc thesis for examination and its been quite lately. In the past I had a goal to work for and the deadline for submission was edging ever so closer at an apparently faster and faster rate![ha a psychological example of relativity! just kidding], alas now that it’s over, there’s this great void that needs to be filled. I taken to attending the Conformal Field Theory and Group Theory classes but still it’s not that entertaining.

I have also started to memorize the Kana alphabet. This has proved quite a difficult task. I have come to respect people have learnt another language on their own! Dammit those Asians have some strong minds! Just looking at the Hiragana makes me lose my determination of learning a new language! Still its worth learning something other than the english. Though I had never thought that learning a new language would be easy but this stuff is really hard. I shall work diligently to try to memorize the kana. I get my results back for my thesis around the 25 November so I shall keep on busying myself with other stuff!

The Light… I think I see the Light!

Well I have just managed to hand in my M.Sc. thesis for Theoretical Physics! Yay! I can be normal now and go out and have some “regular” drinks with my friends and now I dont have to feel guilty that I have to come back and work on my project!

Well all done and submitted I am struck that from all the work that I have out into my thesis…. truth is that the work was quite useless! Ah well my supervisor would disagree but as a Theoretical Physics I have noticed some stuff in this field that’s very sad. Many Theoretical Physicists claim to be theorists but they never work on the theory. These are the Phenomologists, now their work is important (some ones got to do it!) but I find it very unsatisfying! For the past two years I sat calculating some symmetry breaking parameters and this was drudge work! So alas now that I am done with that part of my life I hope that I can do some real work as a theorist.

So I had a meeting last week with the boss(for definitions of the word he is the boss!) expressing my need to do something important! Alas this was not met with enthusiasm as I had expected! Instead I got a stern rebuke about how the work we do is important for the understanding of the universe! Needless to say I could not argue since my funding would be at stake. Any since my supervisor is the only “Theoretical Physicist” at the department of physics, I am forced to conform to his ideals! Anyway I managed to bargain of a deal with him to work on constructing a re-normalizable theory for a meson system so…. I guess that’s as close as I am going to get for the theory!

Anyways i have started to attend some classes for Group Theory and today’s my first lecture on Conformal Field Theory! I think that this will be quite entertaining as the instructor is a Mathematical Physicists(lots of rigorous stuff!)

Anyway on to more lively matters, a friend is coming to visit this weekend! I think we going to go LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE! hahahaha its going to be a good weekend!

It’s a bit different from the previous posts, changing the font seems to be impossible, but you never know, it could just take a nifty set of code!
